The landing gear is equipped with large tires to allow beaching onto unprepared sand. The nose gear retracts into a completely-enclosed well with gear doors. The nose wheel is fully steerable and has an air oil damper system. The nose gear well is narrow to reduce the amount of water and diminish the size of the doors.
The main wheels retract into wells behind the sponson steps. These have high pressure nitrogen oil dampers for soft landings. The steel tube structure is made from thin wall 17-4PH stainless steel.
All amphibious aircraft present a risk of a wheels-up land landing. This usually results in some damage to the hull of a flying boat, but the M7 has a small steel wheel contained in a frangible fairing. In the event of a wheels-up land landing it is best to go around after touching this wheel, then land with wheels down.
